Reproductive System of CuttleFish
Cuttlefish are interesting organisms that live to about 2 years old. Cuttlefish have a very different reproductive system than most organisms. The male puts a modified tentacle into the female's buccal area. This is the part of the female's mouth that keeps the genetic information, so that when her eggs are ready, she can fertilize the egg. The male may spray water into the female's buccal area if he wants to clear the area of other sperm. They do this because during mating season, the male cuttlefish swarm around the females, and the females have intercourse with many males. The females then place eggs in a safe place, such as: under a rock, or in shells. She then puts the sperm on the eggs, thus fertilizing it.
